Shri. Narayanrao Babasaheb Education Society

Ichalkaranji, a land of weavers is located in Western region of Maharashtra State of India. Situated on latitude of 160 – 40’ North and longitude of 740-25’ East, Ichalkaranji comes under moderate rain shadow and has dry climate, which is suitable to textile industry. Naturally it has flourished as a leading centre of textile industry to make it popularly known as the Manchester of Maharashtra. Formerly it was a small hamlet situated on the left bank of the river Panchganga. The migration of weavers and village artisans from different parts of adjacent Karnataka state and also with the advent of Marwari merchants from far-away Rajasthan state in about 1934, accelerated the textile business to grow by leaps and bounds. Now the textile industry has become the mainstay of economic life of the populace of Ichalkaranji. The pivotal role in the development of Ichalkaranji has been played by Naro Mahadev, the founder of the Ghorpade family who made Ichalkaranji the seat of his capital in 1708 A.D. It preserved its status of being a capital of his jahagiri till 1949.

In 1892 Shrimant Narayanrao Babasaheb Ghorpade became Jahagirdar of Ichalkaranji. Though there were limited resources at the disposal of his Jahagiri, he encouraged the industrial development of the town in every possible way. Along with its industrial development Shrimant Ghorpade also dreamt of developing Ichalkaranji educationally. The steps towards materializing this dream were taken by starting Govindrao High School in the then Ichalkaranji province in 1898. Thereafter, by his blessings and initiatives of five donors, who were the ex-students of the then Govindrao High School, Shri Narayanrao Babasaheb Education Society was established on 6th Nov. 1950. In 1962, the Technical high-School was founded. In 1968, Shrimant Gangamai Girls high School was established. In 1976, Junior colleges connected with Govindrao High School and Shrimant Gangamai Girls High School were formed. In1983, our society further extended its activities in the field of education and established a senior college, SHRI VENKATESHMAHAVIDYALAYA. From the academic year 1991-92 Shri N. B. Education has started M.Com. Course (Postgraduate Center) and B.B.A course has been started since 2008.
